TV, eh? podcast episode 23 - Lethally Sexy and Borderline Sociopathic

Episode 23: Listen or download here or subscribe via iTunes or with any other program via the TV, Eh? feed

Anthony and Diane start with a discussion on the importance of a good ending to a short series, starting with Rubicon (bad example) and Terriers (good example) then moving on to Intelligence (oh look, a Canadian example on our Canadian TV podcast).

Netflix has more Canadian content ... but it's still pretty underwhelming.

We feel compelled to hate CTV's new one-hour shows just based on the breathless media release: "Please god don't make them suck as badly as this press release makes them sound." But Diane refuses to relinquish the dream that they might be good based on the creative talent behind them: "Don't crush my dreams!" Oh and another Canadian cop show is being filmed for a potentially American audience.

Most asked question on TV,eh? - when will Murdoch Mysteries be back? Finally an answer: season 4 will premiere on March 16 on Citytv.

Anthony gets his rant on about 3D television, after the Hockey Night in Canada broadcast. Somehow it turns into a brief discussion about porn's influence on our entertainment technology.

You wanted a top 10 list of the best Canadian TV? You get a top 3 (Diane) and top 5 (Anthony) list of shows we watch voluntarily and Diane gets her rant on about the whiny, PR-impaired Canadian television industry.

TV, eh? podcast episode 22: Insidious Negative Popular Stereotyping

Episode 22: Listen or download here or subscribe via iTunes or with any other program via the TV, Eh? feed

We've got not one but three special guests this week - A Heartland Christmas guest star Nicholas Campbell (Da Vinci's Inquest) joins series stars Amber Marshall and Graham Wardle about the Heartland movie that airs on CBC on December 12.

But first a slightly tipsy Diane Wild and always ornery Anthony Marco discuss the bizarre starring turn of Canadian TV in the WikiLeaks documents, Yule Log gate - where Shaw backs down from plans to charge for the channel - and the disappearance of Montreal from the English TV landscape. Anthony also reflects on the career of beloved  CityTV anchor Mark Dailey.

TV, eh? podcast episode 21: CanCon Yule Logs

Episode 21: Listen or download here or subscribe via iTunes or with any other program via the TV, Eh? feed

Anthony and Diane start with a tribute to the amazing career of Leslie Nielsen. Then it's a recap CBC's revised winter schedule, which moves Republic of Doyle out of the way of the World Junior Hockey Championships but not 18 to Life, Little Mosque on the Prairie, or Village on a Diet. CBC's holiday specials include many of their scripted shows but their PR as usual conspicuously avoids mention of 22 Minutes, who have been pumping out newsworthy and well-watched episodes lately. We mock the holiday schedule of CTV for being more a collection of stuff they're throwing on the air.

Anthony rants about MuchMusic's thwarted desire to play homeopathic levels of music videos, and also about the comparatively high cost of content in Canada. Diane pretends to listen, as usual.

TV, eh? podcast episode 20: When the Levy Breaks

Episode 20: Listen or download here or subscribe via iTunes or with any other program via the TV, Eh? feed

Writers Guild of Canada council member Denis McGrath (aka Mr. Dead Things on Sticks) joins us for a discussion on copyright and why Bill C-32 fails. Anthony Marco agrees to the failure but not to the WGC solutions, while Diane Wild eats popcorn from the sidelines.

At about the 44 minute mark, Anthony and Diane turn to other subjects like: copyright. But also: Diane's heroic attempts to catch up on TV, the perils of hype, and the CBC winter schedule.

TV, eh? podcast episode 19 - The Dread Carpet

Episode 19: Listen or download here or subscribe via iTunes or with any other program via the TV, Eh? feed

Our guest this week is Chris Leavins of Todd and the Book of Pure Evil (as well as Cute With Chris, Traders, Slings & Arrows, etc.) who talks about playing the guidance counsellor from hell, his favourite Canadian television the limitations of making a web series about cute cats, and so much more.

But first Anthony and Diane rant, of course, about the Geminis foreign content, Canadians' wacky list of 25 favourite shows, the excrement that is Lake Shore, and the difficulty of cutting the cable cord in Canada. Oh and Lost Girl was renewed, but we're happy about that.

TV, eh? podcast episode 18: A $450 Geminight to Remember

Episode 18: Listen or download here or subscribe via iTunes or with any other program via the TV, Eh? feed

Anthony and Diane talk about the Gemini awards given out last week and those to come on Saturday, which (d)evolves into a rant about the awards representing greed and ego above the best in Canadian television.

We gush a little about Gordon Pinsent and his newfound viral success, as well as upcoming role as the voice of Babar.

What IS up with Canada and our exporting of cop shows to the US?

The CRTC wants the power to fine broadcasters. Should they have it? I say HELL YES.

TV, eh? podcast episode 17 - The Further Adventures of Lip Ring

Episode 17: Listen or download here or subscribe via iTunes or with any other program via the TV, Eh? feed

This week's interview guests are Erin Karpluk and Adam Fergus of Being Erica, who talk about season three's theme of transformation.

Anthony and Diane talk about Gemini host Cory Monteith (aka Lip Ring from Whistler) and recently announced presenters including Grace Park, Enrico Colantoni, and the cast of Rookie Blue, and the special Geminis going to Polka Dot Door and The New Music.

We're less than ecstatic to announce that E! is coming back to Canada. And even more un-ecstatic that Canwest is now Shaw.

Is Being Erica on its way out, along with Shattered? Andrew Ryan of the Globe and Mail thinks so.

And we discuss DVR ratings boosting serial dramas in particular.

It's our trick or treat episode: Anthony and Diane trick you for 30 minutes for a 15 minute treat - an interview with Hugh Dillon of Durham County and Flashpoint, who also talks music and Hard Core Logo.

Before the interview, we babble talk about Halloween themed TV and TV-related costumes, Come Dine With Me Canada, and the Being Erica and The Tudors magical timeslot switch.

Episode 15: Listen or download here or subscribe via iTunes or with any other program via the TV, Eh? feed

Diane's back and ready to rumble with Anthony, who is a bad, bad man. We talk about the hidden message of the Gemini logo and host Cory Monteith of Glee, Stephen Harper's visit to the set of Shaftesbury's Murdoch Mysteries, and all the Canadian TV Anthony is watching that Diane is not (Haven, Sanctuary, Lost Girl, even the last couple episodes of Call Me Fitz).

TV, eh? podcast episode 14: Hurry Hard

Episode 14: Listen or download here or subscribe via iTunes or with any other program via the TV, Eh? feed

Anthony flies solo this week with two recent Diane-recorded interviews featuring the legendary Ron James and three cast members from Men With Brooms.

In addition, he waxes a bit idiotic about the CBC going HNIC in 3D, Call Me Fitz, Lost Girl, Haven and whatever else came into his mind upon hitting the record button.

Diane will be back from her epic journey from the Mummy's Den to Hollywoodland next week.

There's not one but TWO interviews in this podcast ... one with Torrance Coombs of The Tudors (Wednesdays on CBC), Endgame and JPod, and another with co-creators Craig David Wallace and Charles Picco of Todd and the Book of Pure Evil (premiering September 29 on Space).

Anthony and I also talk about premiere week - the hits and misses, American and Canadian style - and the latest Canadian shows premiering soon or in production now. Check out TV, eh? for all the news.

I also point people to Kate Taylor's excellent Atkinson Series on Canadian culture in the digital age, in the Toronto Star. Go read it. All. Now.

TV, eh? podcast episode 12: Dragon's Claws to the Max

Episode 12: Listen or download here or subscribe via iTunes or with any other program via the TV, Eh? feed

If Anthony is right and you people like a cranky Diane, you’re going to LOVE this podcast. I’d just been stood up by a Dragon and you’ll hear me roar about that.

We have two interviews, though, and I was perfectly nice to our guests. (It helps that they were prerecorded.) First up is Max Morrow, the star of Family Channel’s new Connor Undercover and a music aficionado. The show airs Fridays.

Our other guest is Sheri Elwood, creator of Call Me Fitz – one of my favourite Canadian shows ever, which airs Sundays on HBO Canada.

Mixed in there, Anthony and I chat about the new fall season (yes, including US shows), our thoughts on Lost Girl and Call Me Fitz, and the Murdoch Mysteries sale to China.

TV, eh? podcast episode 11: Call Me Anytime, Fitz

Episode 11: Listen or download here or subscribe via iTunes or with any other program via the TV, Eh? feed

I do not have a crush on Jason Priestley. I do, however, have a giant crush on his upcoming show Call Me Fitz. I interviewed him about his days as a teen idol, playing the anti-Brandon Walsh, and about what I'm calling one of my favourite Canadian shows of all time. Yes, before it's aired.

Anthony rants a bit on Bell buying CTV and the use of tax money and incentives to fund Canadian TV - though his objections aren't for the usual reasons.

I force Anthony to discuss the recently announced Battle of the Blades casting and we mention Rookie Blue's ratings success - it's the most watched new Canadian series in two decades.

TV, eh? podcast episode 10: Waking in a Bad Gemini Dream

Episode 10: Listen or download here or subscribe via iTunes or with any other program via the TV, Eh? feed

Anna Silk, the “sexy succubus” of Lost Girl, is this week's special guest, talking about her new Showcase series and her return appearance on the upcoming season three of CBC's Being Erica.

Anthony and I are exhausted just looking at the list of Gemini nominees (there are eleventy billion, as the wise Bill Brioux says) and I'm exasperated by the demonstration, yet again, of how little the Canadian TV industry thinks about their audience. (I was wrong in that nominees who are voting members of the Academy get one free ticket to the gala.)

Shattered's premiere ratings were better than I expected and worse than I hoped. Translation: they were pretty bad.

Before I call Anthony a jerk, we close the show with our favourite 10 Canadian shows, in honour of the Geminis inviting Canadians to vote on their faves of the last 25 years, and Toronto Life compiling their own top 10.

Spoiler alert!

Anthony's Top 10
(in no particular order except the first 2)
  • Hockey Night in Canada
  • SCTV
  • Slings and Arrows
  • Kids in the Hall
  • King of Kensington
  • Hilarious House of Frightenstein
  • The Friendly Giant
  • Hammy Hamster
  • The New Music
  • The Red Fisher Show

Diane's Top 10
(in no particular order except the first 1)
  • Slings and Arrows
  • Intelligence
  • The Newsroom
  • Durham County
  • Twitch City
  • Call Me Fitz (yeah, I know, pre-air – call me crazy)
  • Anne of Green Gables
  • Made in Canada
  • Rick Mercer Report
  • Some years of This Hour Has 22 Minutes

TV, eh? podcast episode 9: The Bucky Gunts Summer Classic

Episode 9: Listen or download here or subscribe via iTunes or with any other program via the TV, Eh? feed

Callum Keith Rennie joins me, Diane Wild, for an interview about Shattered, where he plays a cop with multiple personalities.

But first, I try to convince Anthony Marco that the Emmys are worth watching. I did not succeed. I'm not sure I convinced myself. We mention the Gemini Award nominations which will have been announced by the time you listen to this.

Is 18 to Life returning to The CW? Maaayyyybeeee.

Anthony and I could not be less excited about Canada Sings. But if you disagree, casting is now open.

Then I discuss creative control in the Canadian television industry, from the consistent vision brought to Call Me Fitz to the multiple showrunners and lack of a cohesive vision on Shattered and The Listener. I mention my interview with Peter Keleghan, too, where he brings up some of the same issues. And Anthony laments that Shattered lost a golden opportunity to claim that their multiple showrunners were reflective of the multiple personality of the main character.

We finish up with how PVRs are affecting television viewing - for Anthony, it's being even more annoyed by commercials, while Diane now gets weepy over iPhone 4 commercials.

TV, eh? podcast episode 8 - So You Think We Can Podcast Canada

Episode 8: Listen or download here or subscribe via iTunes or with any other program via the TV, Eh? feed

Anthony Marco and I give a rundown of September's new Canadian shows, including Lost Girl, Todd & The Book of Pure Evil, Call Me Fitz, Men With Brooms and Shattered.

I rant about Global's marketing department doing such a poor job of marketing Shattered in particular, their history of poor CanCon marketing, and their delusion that they have the only new Canadian show premiering this fall (hello, see above).

So You Think You Can Dance Canada guest judge Mary Murphy joins me for an interview to talk about the Top 22, what's unique about the Canadian version of the show, her negotiations to come back full time on the US version, and more.

TV, eh? podcast episode 7 - A rats’ nest of ego, bickering, backstabbing, rumour and sour dislike

Episode 7: Listen or download here or subscribe via iTunes or with any other program via the TV, Eh? feed

It’s a ranty podcast with Anthony Marco and I appalled at CBC’s 3D documentary on the Queen and accompanying distribution of 3D glasses and John Doyle’s fabulous tear on Stursberg’s departure: “The CBC is a bizarre institution, a rats’ nest of ego, bickering, backstabbing, rumour and sour dislike of anyone who either has power inside CBC, or anyone or anything that isn’t part of the CBC.”

A clip of The Kids in the Hall talking about downloading their own show from bittorrent leads to even more CBC bashing. We even disparage a show neither one of us has seen yet: So You Think You Can Dance Canada.

And then I lay into the Canadian TV publicity machine for omitting mention of writers while listing directors and production executives, and the Writers Guild of Canada for letting it happen.

And stick around for a great chat with funny, opinionated TV writer/producer Adam Barken (Flashpoint, Rookie Blue, Shattered), one of Playback’s "10 to Watch" and an observer of the State of the Canadian TV Industry. He also talks about the art and science of writing for TV, and how "they're making it up as they go along" is actually a compliment.

TV, eh? podcast episode 6 - Losing Your Turn At The Wheel Of Fortune

Episode 6: Listen or download here or subscribe via iTunes or with any other program via the TV, Eh? feed

This week on the podcast, Anthony Marco and I talk about the sudden departure of CBC's Richard Stursberg and what that might mean to my beloved Battle of the Blades ("the cheesiest thing on earth on skates").We also almost-sincerely pity CBC for the enormity of their digital switch challenge, and almost-sarcastically pity Canadian journalists at the TV critics press tour for having to scrape for a Canadian angle - this time about The Kids In The Hall. And we discuss whether cable is making a dent in broadcast ratings, in the US and Canada.

The featured interview this week is with Brent Piaskoski and Barbara Haynes, writers of some great tween TV (The Latest Buzz, Naturally Sadie) and Twitter stars. We discuss the state of kids TV in Canada, how it's mostly escaped the "Canadian TV sucks" stigma, and their spec pilot based on their blog and Twitter feed I Do Already.

TV, eh? podcast episode 4: Enrico Colantoni of Flashpoint plus The Movie Network/Movie Central/HBO Canada schedules

Episode 4: Listen or download here or subscribe via iTunes or with any other program via the TV, Eh? feed

Anthony and I mock Global’s upcoming show Canada Sings, the producers of The Bridge for thinking CBS is still on board, Degrassi ratings information, and each other. I praise The Movie Network/Movie Central/HBO Canada and Call Me Fitz but we mock their "terrible branding problem" and the vagueness of The Yard's premise.

We don’t mock Flashpoint but discuss the season three premiere, and I talk to Enrico Colantoni about his role as Greg Parker and how Flashpoint is a great example of Canadian storytelling. As we say during the podcast, the interview doesn’t have great sound quality and strict spoilerphobes should beware.

  • Canada Sings – I am excited at how much Anthony is going to hate this Glee-like reality show, even if I’m not excited about the show itself
  • The Bridge is cancelled on CBS, despite what the producers want to believe
  • Flashpoint season 3 premieres August 6
  • Degrassi is doing well. I think. If I’m parsing the media release correctly.
  • Haven and The Pillars of The Earth are in our rotation
  • The Movie Network/Movie Central/HBO Canada schedule
  • Enrico Colantoni is a very cool dude

TV, eh? podcast episode 3: Gordon Pinsent and CBC's fall schedule

Episode 3: Listen or download here or subscribe via iTunes or with any other program via the TV, Eh? feed

Co-hosts Anthony Marco and Diane Wild discuss the CBC fall schedule, including arguing about the merits of Battle of the Blades, deciding Rick Mercer and the gang at 22 Minutes should never have holidays so we can have a Daily Show/Colbert type show in Canada, cheering Being Erica's renewal, and cynically deciding CBC had nothing better in development. In other news, 18 to Life was picked up by The CW, Haven got decent ratings, Degrassi introduced a transgendered character, and The Pillars of the Earth premieres Friday on The Movie Network/Movie Central.

Plus, a 20-minute interview with Gordon Pinsent about his role in The Pillars of the Earth, his 80th birthday celebration at the opening of his new play, Due South, the new series he has in development with son-in-law Peter Keleghan, what progress he's seen in the Canadian TV industry over the years, his relationship with Sarah Polley, and how he's been in every Canadian TV show and movie ever made.
